Composite is a good fit for homeowners who want a long-term, low-upkeep fence and are comfortable paying more upfront for it. It’s a weaker fit if budget is the main concern – wood or vinyl will get you there for less.

What Composite Is Made Of

Composite fencing is manufactured from a blend of wood fiber and plastic. Trex, one of the best-known brands, uses a mix of roughly 95% recycled wood and plastic in its boards. That combination is what gives composite its wood-like look and feel while removing the parts of wood that actually rot, splinter, or need refinishing.

Composite Styles

Solid privacy panels are the most common composite style, built the same way a board-on-board wood fence would be but without the wood. Shadowbox and horizontal-plank composite are also available for homeowners who want the low-maintenance benefit with a different look than a flat privacy wall.

Composite manufacturers back their material with meaningfully longer warranties than you’ll see on wood.
