What to Ask a Fence Contractor Before You Hire

A few questions matter more here than in a generic version of this checklist – Houston’s soil, weather, and patchwork of city/county/HOA rules make some of this genuinely local.

• What is the material and build spec for the fence type you are exploring? Not all materials and builds are equal.
• What will installation day look like? Who manages the onsite crew?
• Do they set posts in concrete, and can they speak to post depth for our clay soil?
• Do they help with HOA/DRC paperwork if you’re in an HOA or Woodlands village?
• Do they carry General Liability and Workers’ Comp insurance — since Texas doesn’t issue a fence-contractor license, this is the real question to ask instead.
• Do they give you a written quote before starting, and is removal/haul-away of an old fence included or extra?
• What happens if there’s a problem after installation? Do they come back, and under what terms?
• Do they call Texas 811 before digging on every job?

If a contractor can’t give you a straight answer on any of these, that’s worth noting before you sign.
