Preparing Your Fence for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs June through November here, and a solid privacy fence catches a lot of wind load. And that’s why storm prep matters more for fencing than most homeowners assume. This is a seasonal routine worth doing every year, not just before a specific storm.

Before the season: what to check

Walk your fence line and look for leaning posts, loose or missing hardware, and boards separating at the base. These are early signs of the soil-line rot and post movement common in our clay soil, and all things that make a fence more likely to fail in high wind. Secure loose gates and yard items near the fence line too, since flying debris causes as much fence damage as wind alone.

After the storm: what to check first

Once it’s safe, walk the fence line again for the same things: leaning or heaved posts, panels pulled off rails, boards separated at the base. Photograph any damage before starting repairs if you plan to file an insurance claim.

Repair vs. replace after storm damage

A handful of damaged panels or a post or two is usually a straightforward repair.
