About Montgomery

Montgomery is a small, historic town on the west side of Lake Conroe. It was established in 1837 and served as the first county seat when Montgomery County was created that same year (the county seat later moved to Conroe). The town is also known locally as the birthplace of the Texas Lone Star flag, tied to resident Charles B. Stewart, though independent historians consider the evidence for that claim thin. At under 2,000 residents, it’s one of the smallest and most rural service areas we cover, surrounded by lake-community subdivisions rather than a dense urban core.

Steel fits waterfront and golf-course lots well, since it keeps the view open and is usually easier to get approved in HOA communities. Aluminum fencing is another option for that same look.

Farther out, farm and ranch fencing is common on acreage properties. For standard residential lots, cedar and wood privacy fencing is still the most popular choice.

Communities like Bentwater and Walden typically require architectural review approval for fences; confirm the specifics with your association. Outside of those, permit requirements vary by whether you’re inside city limits or in unincorporated Montgomery County.
